Creating a Happy and Safe Environment for your Bird
Toys can help turn a house into a home. They bring fun and exercise into a bird's environment and can help minimize boredom. However, they must be safe in order not to risk possible injury. The size, shape, and durability of toys selected must be based on the type of bird; very simply, larger birds need tougher toys.
For instance, plastic beads can be lots of fun for a budgie, but can spell disaster for a parrot. Be careful of toys hung by chains and jingle-bell type bells. Toes and beeks can get stuck in them. Mirrors are fun for small birds, but larger birds could break them. Pieces of leather, rawhide dog chews, metal rings and small lava rocks are some of the favorite toys for larger birds.
Swings provide a wonderful source of entertainment for many birds. There are a large variety of different sizes available. These range from the simple plastic swing for canaries to the elaborate activity centers for larger birds.
